My niece has been incredibly helpful this past year and I'd like to give her a going away (to seminary) gift. I can't afford anything really expensive and she can't take things like an ipod with her. I was thinking of a monogramed towel set.

Any other ideas?

My aunt gave me a sandwich maker to take with me. Or my grandparents bought me for my birthday that year a backpack, I used it every single shabbos when we went away, on tiyulim, as handluggage in the years after, and still use it as handluggage or for the gym, 10 years later! It was an LL Bean one, perfect size - roomy enough for everything, but not one of those massive camping ones, with a leather bottom, so it never ripped.

OP, can you give us a bit of details?

- Is she in ch'l and going to EY? a good pocket map of J'lem or small hebrew-english electronic dictionary, or travel guidebook? International calling cards?

- Is that her first time to be living away from home? kiddush cup/candlestick/havdalah set/chanukiah on her own?

- note US and EY has different voltage/socket shapes.

Thanks everyone for the ideas so far. I thought of some luggage, but apparently they have everything she needs from over the years.

She does not live in the US.

She is Lubavitch.

She'll be going away for Shabbosim or staying in Sem where kiddush/havdallah will be done for her. I used a disposable menorah for chanuka and t-lights were supplied by the sem for Shabbos.

Please keep the ideas coming.

I still remember my two most useful gifts. A hot water bottle (gets cold in the winter in yerushalayim!) and a small sewing kit.

I was going to say a toiletry bag, but filled up with things. If she is going away she is going to need all those things.

I made for my sister a photo calendar. You can do it on any of the photo processing web sites or at a drug store. I put a lot of work into it - but I think that she will enjoy it. Sem girls like to put up pics to remind them of home.

Toiletry bag is great.
A Journal.
A collage to hang on her wall, or even a pocket book.
Any travelling accessories are great too.
You can make her a pillow case with a picture printed on it.

A nice travel mug! I started drinking coffee in Sem...but not sure you want to encourage that kind of addiction....

Longchamp purse (or tote bag)...it was so useful, and I used it every shabbos and it looked nice.

I love all the ideas that involve pictures! She's actually coming to spend a week with us so I'll make sure we get some nice snapshots of her with the kids. It's true, I remember being so into pictures on my wall. I even made a really nice photo collage clock for a friend of mine. She loved it!

Thanks everyone!
