I have been reading the Little House on the Prairie series to my boys 6 and 8. Laura is about their age in the first two books, so they find it very interesting to hear how she lived.
The Farmer Boy book is about Almanzo (Laura's future husband) when he is 8 and living on a farm in upstate NY. My boys are amazed at all the farm work the children did in those days, they can't quite imagine themselves doing all that labor.
They also love all the Boxcar Children books. There are at least 30 of them. I think they are totally clean and age appropriate.
Many of the earlier Beverly Cleary books (published in the 50's and 60's) are clean and nice, too. These are the Ramona, Henry Huggins and Beezus stories. Her later stories about Ramona are very groovy and 70's-ish and just not as good. Cleary also wrote The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Its very nice.

My kids enjoyed all the books by Ron Roy (A-Z Mysteries; Capital Mysteries, etc.) at that age. If you don't mind sports-related plots, Matt Christopher and Mike Lupica write tons of stories that my boys loved.

This came up on the Harry Potter list: www.chinuch.org . The list is pretty good, too long to print out so I may spend some time going through it and writing down names of books we haven't got to yet.

Exiled Down Under - excellent book. Might be a little too advanced, depends on your son's level.
