Sherri, the new GK YA (young adult) books, like the Son of the Mob books, are NOT for kids.
He wrote a lot of his books in his teens and early twenties. Those are great. Though A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag (I loved that one too) is about senior high, so caveat emptor. But then again, his middle school kids in No More Dead Dogs are about up to the same stuff too. He's moving with the times unfortunately.

maybe we're just too exhausted ... I read 6 of them I believe ...

and always read the book prior to the movie ... no matter what you're reading ... my girls do that for fun and to compare the differences ...

Raisin, I remember you once asked me about this and I never remembered to answer you, because I do read them with my kids (6 and 7). They are good enough readers to read it on their own but we decided that Harry Potter would be something that we read together- we get to spend time together, they enjoy being read to, and I can skip over or change things that I don't think are appropriate. My kids discovered a site called Harry Potter wiki so they already know the outcomes of all the characters and won't be devastated when the good ones die.

(Even though the hardest I ever cried when reading a book was at G. Weasley's death, even though I knew it was coming.)

how do you stop them reading ahead? my kids would just grab the book and read till the end before the next bedtime rolled around.

personally, I think harry potter is a lot less problematic then other kids books romance wise. There is a bit of romance in some of the books, and perhaps one kissing scene, iirc, but very little in the last one.

At the end you are shown what happens 15 years later - who marries who.

Occasionally I will find my six year old reading ahead, but I really think he's too young to get certain connotations (we're only up to book 4 anyway.) I also think they like the togetherness of reading and know that reading ahead ruins this.

Also, now that they have Harry Potter wiki they spend more time looking things up on that. It's a much easier way to skip ahead.

I agree. I recently read a review of the Half Blood Prince movie that said that the Vatican newspaper approved the film because it is so chaste (they'll show an almost kiss and then cut to the window or something.) In a book it's very easy to not notice, especially if you are young or a boy who doesn't really care about this stuff. We have a TV and I don't let my kids watch shows with boy/girl stuff but somehow it doesn't bother me as much in books, since I believe intellectual curiosity trumps most things. I know I'm in the minority about this though.

Yes, I was still crying from the Weasley death and the last two pages just made me cry harder. My daughter (the seven year old) is into who marries who above all else. Somehow I ended up with a typical girl.

I started reading the Harry Potter books when I was about 13 and the 3rd book came out. I read the 3rd and I got hooked so I started from the beginning. I was a pretty open minded reader at that point so I didnt think it was bad. It was actually pretty "clean" in my opinion. I was taking out all kinds of books from the library since I was about 10 or 11. By the time my parents realized what kind of books I was reading it was too late. Now my parents don't let my siblings anywhere near the public library which I personally don't think is the right way to handle it but that is their decision.

I have an eight year old who can easily chew through The HP books. I decided not to let him read it simply because 4-7 are not age appropriate for him. I know that once he reads the first few he will want to finish the series. I do not think that the last 4 are at all for a younger child. I would let a 12 year old read them all though.

Also a younger child can be easily scared by HP.
