I'm usually weary about ordering cameras online, being that there are many websites that are ripoffs. I'm not 100% sure about them. Take a look.

Always check an online vendor on resellerratings.com.
By availability, though, it says "shipped when received from manufacturer" or something like it. Maybe you should call first to check how long that might take. Make sure that they will indeed have it, and not call you in10 days that they can't get it, and then you will have missed it at BH.
Here's another legit place that has the kit for $546.95, and for $50 more you can have the additional lens with VR (vibration reduction) which helps stabilizes the camera when using a long and heavy lens. It's not something you MUST have, but it's a big help with zooms. I think the non VR lenses are very popular, so you can do without it.

After reading all the reviews, I tried to call them...waited 20 minutes and still no one so I just hung up .

Yeah, you're probably talking about ritz. Resellerratings.com has saved me much agmas nefesh in the past.
The sites I trust for anything photo or electronics related are
Amazon
BHPhoto
Adorama
Buydig
BeachCamera
AbesofMaine
I've ordered from almost all, (Beach and Buydig are rumored to have the same owners) without any problem. If you're in NY or NJ, make sure to order from out of state so that you shouldn't pay tax. BH, Adorama are NY. Buydig, Beach, AbesofMaine are NJ. Amazon I think is pretty much everywhere.

a $10 warrnetee sounds to cheap to be true...I wouldnt trust it
The reason I go for b&h is alot of these places give you for cheaper and your getting gray market...which I dont think you can get a warrnetee on.
Also I have a tripod and do this professionally and I can count on one hand how many times I used it...also most of these bags r cheap and zippers break easily...but will hold for a couple of months.
Also to save on shipping you can go to the store...if you live in a decnt distance. B&H is my fav. store...it's totaly disney land!

Thank you so much. So I've decided to order my camera from Abe's of Maine. They sell the camera plus the additional lens (same as B&H offers) and a 4 GB memory card for $549 + $17 discount = $532. Plus paypal offers a 2.5% discount but the $17 discount might negate that so I'm not sure if I'll get it.
Now They also offer the same kit plus an extra 6-hour battery (they told me it comes with a standard 1-hour battery) and an 8 GB card for additional $50. Is it worth it??

About the card- the D40 is a 6 megapixel camera, so the 4 gb card should be able to store lots of photos. If you think you will store the photos on the card for a long time and not transfer to a computer, then you need a second card. An 8 gb gives you tons of storage. Having said that, you can find 8gb cards for much cheaper than $50, especially if you're willing to wait for a good sale somewhere. I just bought a 4 gb card for $20, and there was an 8gb for almost $30.
I don't know about the battery, I don't own this camera. I tend to think, though, that the standard camera battery should last longer than 1 hour. I don't know how much the battery costs, it's always good to have a backup, especially a specialty battery bc it's not like you can run in to the nearest grocery and buy AA batteries.
On a photography forum I frequent, many people seem to be happy with third party batteries that they buy on ebay. So it depends how much it costs.
BTW, if you didn't buy it yet, one more thing to consider, I haven't seen the D40 up close, but from what I gather it's fairly small. If your husband has large-ish hands it may be a bit uncomfortable. If you already bought it, don't worry. If your husband finds it too small to handle, you can always add a battery grip which adds battery power and makes it bigger (all for more money, of course ).

Thanks Zahava and everyone else, u've been a big help. I'm just gonna get the $549 package from Abe's of Maine. I actually went into a Best Buy yesterday to look at the camera but they didn't have it on display, they only had the D60 which is pretty similiar in size and it looks perfect. My dh doesn't have very big hands so it'll be just great for him.
Thanks again all!

Enjoy the purchase (or your husband's smile)!
It's always good to check out a camera in person before spending so much money. Glad that was approved! Post some pics when you have them!

the bat. that comes with the camera should def. last longer then an hour...I bought a second battery right away cuz I forget to charge..and only realize once my battery is dead...also u'd rather have 2 4g or even two 2g's..then one 8...
always transfer your pictures to ur comp.! ur card can go curropt and all those thousands of pics can get lost..transfering is imp!!!!
Njoy ur new camera and it should def. be big enough for even big hands!

OK, I got my camera already!!!
THEY SENT ME A D60 INSTEAD OF A D40!!! Does anyone know if this is a Jewish company? If so, I believe I'm obligated to let them know, but if not then I believe I'm allowed to keep it without saying anything. Any ideas????

Wow, what luck!
I can't say for sure, but I think they were closed R'H and Yom Kippur. I may be confusing them with Buydig, but I remember with certainty checking one of the sites on Motzei one of the above, and it said they were closed for the holiday... Don't know how to find out though.
They were in Brooklyn (Flatbush) at one point. Maybe you know any old timer living in Flatbush that could tell you?
ETA: I just checked the website and it says they close Fridays at 3:00. While it's only circumstantial evidence, it's a pretty good indication.

So I found out they are a Jewish company and so I called them and told them what happened. They were very nice and this was the solution: they're sending me out a new one that shud be arriving today and they're sending ups to pick up this one. I also asked for some compensation for my trouble but the only thing I got was a $100 restaurant gift card which I'm sure isn't for a kosher restaurant (although I didn't bother asking). Oh well, maybe I can sell it on ebay.

Oh well. At least they were nice enough to pick up and ship without any trouble.
Will you hide it till the August anniversary?

Ummm ummm....lol. I confess...I gave him the camera about a month ago, but just because we went to so many places this summer and I wanted great pics! I told dh specifically it's an anniversary gift and that was the reason I gave it early...but the extra lens I did manage to hide and I'll give him that on the actual date of our anniversary.

Yeah, every month that the camera was hidden was a month's pictures not taken. Enjoy!
