We are invited for the shabbos day seudah to our rav's home and I am stumped as to what to give as a gift. The youngest children at home are highschool age . I don't want to give the traditional flowers, candy or wine because I feel they must get tonnes of that. Any good ideas?

what's wrong with traditional flowers, candy or especially wine? Wine is great, everyone needs wine for kiddush and havdalah, and it can get expensive.
An alternative is nice hand towels embroidered with "al netilat yadayim" or "lich'vod Shabbat Kodesh".

I would much rather receive the wine or flowers over cake. I plan my meals that I am serving, and when someone brings a cake they expect you to serve it. Also I (see hand washing thread) don't really want things from others kitchen.

She's bored of flowers, wine and chocolate. Cake doesn't necessarily have to be served at the seudah. The hostess can, if she wants, put it on the table though. And regarding your issue 'from other kitchens' - depends. If the Rebbetzin is GR, Clarissa, Freidasima or anyone else of the 89 group of Always and you are one of the 43 Nays or Sometimes, then bakery stuff can a be an option (not that bakers cannot be from the 43, but at least psychologically, the 89ers would feel safe). Otherwise, if your Rebbetzin is not from the 89 and she knows you personally, you can bring them your own fancy cake, cookies or rumballs.

So now a hostess gift has to entertain the hostess? In that case, give her tickets to a comedy club or hire Shloimie Dachs to sing zemiros.

Thanks for the responses. There is nothing wrong with wine I am just sure they have tonnes of bottles sitting there not getting used so quickly. So if I can bing something else I woudl prefer it, if not I will get a bottle of wine. But since the wine he drinks is about $6 I'd want soemthing else to go with it. Any ideas?
Baking I'm not going to do because they are very chassidishe and I'm not sure if they'd eat it so I wouldn't want to bother and then make them feel uncomfortable.
The hand towels is a good idea. Any others?

I would suggest going to Kitchen Art and asking what Rebbetzin _________ likes in your price range - CS usually knows these things.

Not such a good idea. If I were the Rebbetzin I'd tell her not to bring me a thing, just come!

Agree. I also find flowers a waste of money but sometimes it's better than emptyhanded.

Do you know what store and city I am talking about???? The Rebbetzin does NOT work in the store--you can reread what I wrote--but often the people who own stores get to hear what "famous" people in the city like and are happy to share their knowledge. Emee knows exactly what I am talking about.

You misunderstood my post. It doesn't matter which store and which city? (I assume she's talking about Toronto, bec. she mentioned it in another post.) I was just trying to say that if I were the Rebbetzin and she'd ask me what gift I want, I wouldn't want her to spend money so I would just tell her not to bring me anything, just to come.

Let's try this one more time. I suggested that Emee should be asking at the store, and the Rebbetzin does NOTwork there nor does she own the store! I never said she should ask the Rebbetzin.

Oh, so I misunderstood. Now I get it and think it's a good idea.

Wouldn't buy food or cook homemade unless I was sure they would eat it, you know what I mean... I had guests who didn't eat from the parve cake from chassidishe shop. If it was about our cutlery being not heilig enough they could have eaten the side where we didn't cut. You can be sure they're not welcome here anymore. Don't take that risk.
