The sense of entitlement the kids show up with, the lack of respect for teachers, kids that need services being denied b/c parents insist they don't want to "label" their children.

ANON in case anyone knows me in my smallish town.

I was advised by my professors not to teach more than 10 minutes-- and this is for high school kids. so that's what I do... warm-up, maybe a discussion, then 10 minutes of modeling a skill. and then they're on their own doing some activity that reinforces the skill until the last 5 minutes or so when we wrap up.

OP- classroom management.

Classroom management. In many schools they face lack of administrative support.

Actually, BH, I think I do have that balance. I'm not a mechaneches, which girls sometimes resent. I teach secular subjects - and I know that the girls are all comfortable with me - they respect me, have perfect discipline, but feel free to talk to me about anything - always respectfully though.

you're right though. I didn't act like a friend in the beginning of the year.

When I was teaching I had very warm relationships with my students too, BH. I think part of that is if you LOVE being their teacher and LOVE igniting that spark, it makes a big difference in how much they respect and trust you. What's the old rule? Don't smile until January??? (I'm kidding!)
