Maybe sefarim like a typical bar mitzvah boy, so that he feels like the other boys and his parents feel good about it? IY"H I will have this situation in a few years with a good friend's son and I wonder what to do.

I hear that argument. One can say why buy him sefarim that he can't learn from, but how many bar mitzvah boys learn all that much from most of the sefarim they receive? It's a social thing we do, so why treat a boy with Down Syndrome differently?

Maybe a beautiful coffee table book of photography (pictures of Israel? A sports book if he's into sports)

right - I see we had a similar thought ... but let the seforim be ones he might get use from ... or would be good on everybody's book shelf ...

Most Bar Mitzvah boys *can* learn from the sefarim that they receive, whether or not they choose to do so. Depending upon the sefer, it may be far out of the reach of a Downs Syndrome boy. Why give him something that he can never enjoy? Why rub it in to the parents how much he will never have, instead of celebrating all that he has, and all that he can and will have?

I agree and I have a close reli with DS.
While other boys may keep their seforim for when they are older and can learn from them, it's less likely that a child with DS will make as much use out of them.
But that also depends on the child. there are different degrees of how DS affects the abilities of a child and there is even something called mosaic DS that may only affect their looks.
I'd say find out what the child may appreciate. why don't you just ask the parents or someone close?

Why don't you call his parents and ask them what kind of present he'd like or what kind of things he's into....

get him a music player, like an mp3 player or something of the sort. He can also listen to torah on it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
In the end I got him a nice tabletop shtender. I figured that he could use that regardless of the level of book he was learning from.
