(just to preface, our minhag is to only eat fruits and vegetables that we can peel)
5 yr old ds said to me yesterday, "mommy, why can't we eat challah on pesach? you can peel it."

Actually, I remember standing in front of a display at the farmers' market years ago, and wondering vaguely why I'd never bought corn on the cob for Pesach when it's so easy to peel! Now THAT'S not seeing the forest for the trees!

Took me a while to get what you were saying!
I'm thinking -- she's right, it is easy to peel corn, and it's not like there's going to be wax on the kernels, so you wouldn't need to peel them individually... ohhhhhh.... CORN.

Um, this may sound a bit forward but forgive me in advance...
I was raised in a family that followed those minhagim and to be honest THAT yeshiva system is completely out-of-wack! The children have no clue WHAT basic chametz is. I has yeshiva kids in our home for pesach and they started screaming CHAMETZ Chametz, they naively assumed that ALL CRUMBS are chametz. I can sort of undertsand the need for extra minhagim but all the special "chumras" should be explained to young children so they don't ask questions like "Why can't we eat challah on Pesach." I don't care how many songs, and divrei torah your kids may have been exposed to but if s/he misses the most basic mitvot about Pesach I find that pathetic.
This is not meant as an attack. I just think there is something missing in the chinuch process. My five year old son and four year old niece can give you a very baisc explanation why there is no cheerios, pizza and orios on Pesach. None of my kids ever asked for Challah on Pesach. I would call the teachers right after yom tov...

There was a story years ago about a woman who was making a simcha (maybe Bar Mitzvah) on Pesach. She tried to get shmurah flour so she could bake all kinds of cakes for the Bar Mitzvah. Of course, shmurah flour was not so readily available, but with perseverance, she finally obtained her prized flour and proceeded to bake all kinds of fancy cakes to serve on Pesach....
Has anyone else heard this story and do you know if it actually happened?

We didn't have any questions about eating challah (a def. no-no...) but my 5 year old son said on isru chag : "mum, we forgot to do alya laregel" ! In his mind (till we reminded him it was otherwise)we have beit hamikdash and he just didn't want to accept we didn't go up with a korban... So he's davening hard now to be able to go on Shavuot!
B"h - I have a tzaddik!
