This is great when you have very little time or energy to prepare a meal.

Saute an onion, if desired. Add diced carrot and saute, add diced potatoes and diced sausage (I use something called cervalat, one per person; the last time I was in the US, I saw it on sale in Rubashkin, but if you can't find it you can use hot dogs). Season with salt, pepper and paprika. Add a tiny bit of water, maybe 1-2 tablespoons, just enough so it doesn't scorch, and cook on a low flame for about 20 minutes or until the carrots are soft.

Here' another one pot recipe that is great for shabbat or during the week.

I use this when travelling. I do this in the crock pot but you can do this in a roasting pan. You can make it for a Yom Tov lunch and it's fresh and warm for lunch.

One cut up chicken or 8 pieces (skinned, washed and patted dry)
paprika
pepper
garlic powder
2 or 3 small potatoes OR
1 sweet potato
1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms washed
1 cup uncooked rice (brown rice is delicious)
2 cups water
2 tablespoon onion soups mix
1 teaspoon oil (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 or turn crock pot on high.
Lightly sprinkly chicken with paprika, garlic powder and just a little pepper and set aside.

Thoroughly rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Place the rice on the bottom of the pot. Pour the 2 cups of water over the rice. (even if you use brown rice don't add more water, there is water in the chicken and the vegies.) Add the oil and onion soup mix to the rice and stir in in.

On top of the rice layer the sliced mushrooms. Place chicken pieces on top of the mushrooms. Cut up the potatoes (either sweet or white) into small chunks and place around the chicken.

Cook in oven covered for at least 1 and 15 minutes. You can check after 35 minutes if it needs more water. It depends on how much water your chicken and vegies have.

Cook in crock pot on high for about 1/2 to get in really warm and then lower to low for about 5 - 6 hours. I usually do this first thing in the morning and put it on high. I go get dressed and before I leave for work I turn it down to low. You can also just turn your crock pot on to low before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning your dinner is ready and you have almost no pots to wash!

yummmy! Tongue Out

not if it's not going to be touched.
If I don't care about it till tomorrow, when it's gonna be cooked anyway,
there is no danger of me trying to speed up the cooking.

(many people eat cholent on Fri Night, after seuda)

I think that it either has to be cooked enough to be edible (not fully cooked though) or totally raw so that you won't be tempted to speed up its cooking for that night - like fy said.

I think you should check with your Rav, because I heard that there is a difference between chicken and Meat -Meat can be put in raw and not chicken. This is because meat cooks slower than chicken and since anyways it wouldn't be ready for Fri night, you wouldn't be in danger of doing anything to speed up the cooking process. Which were it chicken and you had unexpected guests and needed food to serve them, you might be in danger of doing. Not 100% sure though, so ask your Rav...

chicken when boiled in soup doesn't take long for it to not be totally raw.
I heard as long as it is mostly cooked it is ok.

I also heard it has to be half cooked enough for a robber to come and eat it in a hurry. I also saw it in the lubavitcher cook book.

The Halacha is different with a pot where the cooking can NOT be speeded up, I.e. a crock pot with only one setting.

The din with crockpots is different - the food needs to be either totally raw or totally cooked b4 Shabbos.

I make this easy supper:

put a little bit of olive oil on bottom of pot
slice a large onion and put in pot
put chicken on top of onions
cover with alot of ketchup
cover and cook on low for one hour

I usually serve this with rice. I pour the juice from the chicken (theres alot!) onto the rice and its so yummy! noone can believe its only ketchup.

Maachal ben drusai - is that food is cooked enough to be edible and this should be how much its cooked before shabbos.

UNLESSs the food is COMPLETELY raw and put on right before shabbos intended for hte next day (and won't be touched) ie. cholent in crockpot

Have asked a rov about this and this was the answer.
