ok, so we're trying so save (for shabbos) and come up with a new side salad for the weekday. I have made cole slaw before but it always comes out tasting homemade with a thick consistency and it turns orange from the carrots.
What am I doing wrong?
We like cole slaw from places like deli plus and hadar geulah in bp if anyone knows them. It's not thick and not vinegary, but a bit sweet.
Anyone have a similar recipe for me to try?

I've found that the trick to the right consistency is that you add hot water until it is the right way. I've never had it turn orange - maybe its the brand of lettuce you are using.
this is really good:
6 Tbsp mayo
1/2 cup sugar
1 bag shredded cabbage
1/3 cup vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
4 Tbsp hot water.
I add water to make it the consistency that I want.
I make this every shabbos and my dh loves it.

thanks so much. a few questions: You use shredded cabbage and not cole slaw mix? Also so carrot for taste?
How long in advance do you make it?

I use the Dole Cole slaw mix which comes with carrots.
I make it Friday right before or after candle lighting depending on when I have time (I use cold water on shabbos - I'm not sure if it is an issue). My dh likes it when it has been sitting for a while and gets a little mushy. It stills tastes the same and doesn't change colors when I server it Sunday night for supper. It just gets more soggy - which he likes.

I put less vinegar so it shouldn't taste so vinergary, and also I put a half a cup water it is delicious

thanks sky, it was a huge hit and so much more affordable. I can make an almost two lb container for about 2 bucks, when 1 lb costs about 5-6 dollars store bought. Plus dh said he liked the homemade better.

I learnt from a caterer that the secret to good cole slaw, is to spread the cabbage out, sprinkle on salt, sugar and pepper and let it sit for a half hour, than add the rest of ingredients

I think that was a mistake. 5 Tbsp salt in cole slaw is too much. Maybe she meant 5 Tbsp water.

this is my famous coleslaw recipe it's AMAZING. I'm sorry my amounts aren't exact it's not from a recipe, just trial and error.
I say T but I just use a soup spoon. I'm assuming it's the same.
4 heaping T of mayo (huge heaping)
2 T of vinegar
3 T of lemon juice
1/2 c sugar
a little salt and pepper and mustard powder
drop of water (I turn the sink on and off real quick)
