I heard this tip: wash you wool and dry clean stuff in your washing machine with cold water, gentle cycle, and HEAD & SHOULDERS SHAMPOO! My husband's Shabbos coat is in the machine as we speak.

I don't see why you should watse money on head and shoulders unless the garment suffers from dandruff. I use regular shampoo, the cheapest I can find. I would NOT suggest washing, even by hand, taliored garments like coats and suits. even though the wool may survive, other components like linings and interfacings may shrink, and parts that have been put together with adhesives may come apart.
shampoo is fine for things like sweaters and scarves, and felt berets.

May I ask why shampoo is better than detergent? And won't wool shrink in the washing machine?
