I ordered kappels for my almost 3 year old and that's how I spelled it, dh claims I misspelled it, I came here for validation and looks like I'm wrong

Yud -Vav-Daled-Yud is Yudi.

I don't write /engrave my children's nicknames only whole name (personal pet peeve) that being said my son now writes his name in English yidi.
In yiddish teachers always spell his name יודי

Nope.
Even those of us who speak with a different havara spell the name Yehudah יהודה, we just pronounce it differently.The name's usually spelled יודי regardless of the havara.
