Does anyone know where this name originated from? I know what I means, but do you know a source for the name? I love it and would love to use it but need to convince DH Wink

The root might be Hebrew but according to wiki the origin of the name is not Jewish at all. Not sure how reliable wiki is though.
It is quite popular among the dati crowd in Israel and while I agree that it sounds beautiful, I personally don't love the meaning. For me the word עמל work/burden has more negative connotations.

It's an old Jewish name עמליה.
It has a similar meaning to Ovadia.
I am familiar with it having Yekke origins.
It's traditional, but quite uncommon.

Interesting, I had a Hispanic housekeeper at one point named Amalia.
