Today was day 1 of toilet training my 23 month old daughter. Towards the end of the day she held herself in for a few hours and kept saying she needs to go to the bathroom, but she wasn't letting go on the toilet. I know this is normal and happens to lots of kids. I'm asking advice if anyone has experience with this and for any ideas.
Thank you!

Can you have her sit with a diaper on the toilet? It could be she doesn't feel safe enough to let go. Still praise her for making in the right place.
Later you can try cutting a hole in the diaper or encouraging her to take off the diaper.

So actually she has been getting on the toilet fully dressed for a couple of months already (wants to be like her older siblings!) And has been asking for this for a while. (Just to clarify, she isn't afraid of the toilet) We said goodbye to her diapers today and I don't want to confuse her so it isn't an option for now.
But it's an interesting idea
