Has anyone heard of the name Grunia? What does it mean? Where does it come from? What language? I am curious.

Grunia is a Russian and Ukrainian name. It is not Jewish at all, unless it made it into Yiddish somehow.

You can metamorphise some names. My classmate Bella liked to say she was of Italian birth, but her great-grandmother Beileh was Russian. Bela or beileh means "white" in russian. I also once met a woman named Bailey who I thought was a nonjewish brit till she told me her Jewish name was Beileh.

I know a few Grunia, Gruna and although they are not common, I think it's terrible to verbally assault those who give those names for a beloved relative, and we also shouldn't imply that they aren't Jewish names. If it's a name hallowed by Jewish tradition, it's Jewish! Whatever it's origin, or similarity to names in the "world".
Names like Zushia or Zelig are just as Jewish as Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov.

TR, you know as well as I do, that in Lub. we tend to use the same names over and over, and that the kids named for relatives or named with unusual names from Novi are tortured.

I've heard of a few Grunny's & Bryna/Breini's. I don't see anything wrong with those names. I agree that the anonymous comment before was a little harsh.

isn't that a bit extreme? how can a name spoil a whole life? and you could always use it as second or third...
