and I thought I finally found s/o who fasts like my father - he really fasts every erev Pesach! Except for one year when he went to the bris of a close family friend - he would've gone even if it hadn't been Ta'anis Bechoros.

I had heard that fasting was not the correct thing to do.

for who?
someone who CAN attend a siyum or someone who missed a siyum?
this is OP here. My hsuband asked a rov and was told to fast. He had to break it though, because of his depression. Sad If he gets sick, he can relapse.

He could've learned the shortest Masechta and made a Siyum. That's what DH did for himself and for my son (if my son would miss a Siyum, I'd have to fast, because both DH and DS are Bechorim).

Maseches Tamid - 7 or 9 pages. I think most men can tackle it in an hour or two. Better than fasting.

I attended var. shiurim before Pesach and they said that we don't fast the whole chodesh Nissan, and that this fast is botul by a siyum. It's a very strong thing to attend a siyum.

He feels (his personal opinion) that going to a siyum just to get out of the fast is a loophole and he doesn't buy it. When there was a bris that he would have gone to anyway, he did go and did not fast. He's a good faster, and helps lots around the house on erev Pesach and I never heard him complain about fasting. Again, that's his opinion - he is not a rav.

That's interesting Mali. I was told that DH is just responsible to fast for my son (same sitch, both bechorim) I am also nursing. Does that change things?
Confused

I guess there are different opinions. I was also surprised to hear this, and yes, I'm also nursing, so I'm sure that can change the P'sak as well.

All they eat in shul is pesach'dike cake anyway - no one has chometz left at this point, all the homes and shuls are cleaned already.
