This is a weird question, but can old matzah be used a year later? Last year I totally overbought and I have a whole big package of matazh from last year sitting in my pesach cabinet. I told my husband we need to throw it out and that I bet its rancid, my husband thinks it will be fine. What do you guys think?

I don't believe that it goes rancid.

I've used matza from the year b4 (as long as it was sealed all year) - it's fine.

Actually, it CAN go rancid, but it is not necessarily going to be rancid from last year!

There is an easy way to tell if any of the dry goods have gone rancid. This includes cake mixes, cake meal, matzo meal etc.. (it can happen to things that were purchased THIS year too, cause who knows how long they've been sitting in storage?!)

If you open the item and it smells like PAINT, it is rancid!!

Good luck shock

the thought doesn't let me eat it ... even if it were really still good ... I have saved sealed boxes and then thrown them away anyway ... I won't even eat cereal that was bought a month ago ...

it might be better in kugel or matz brei, or toasted and eaten with a dip rather than plain . . . .

My IL's put away shmura matzah when they overbought and it wes perfect the next year. Though most of the old matzah was used for cereal or matzah farfel, but we did eat some of it and it was totally fi ne.

I wouldn't use processed matza a year later, but hand made shmura, for sure is fine. We often use from one year to another and last year our supply had a problem from the year before that his matza arrived AFTER Pesach, so he sold "last year's" matzo at half price. We bought about 20 lbs of it, and it was totally fine.

what warms?

Do you mean "worms"?

Worms aren't overly interested in my matza, at least that's what I've discovered.

Old matzah can become infested. To check matzah for infestation: hold each matzah parallel to your eyes and look to see that it has no threads hanging from it. If it has threads - it has been infested, throw it away. If not, eat.

we used old matzah this year, it was fine. You can heat in the oven for a few minutes to recrisp if you like.

Ribbie, you are back! Nice to see you again. Smile
