We just got a cat. Are we allowed to pet her on Shabbos and yom tov?
I have a whole set of hilchos Shabbos seforim but for some reason it doesn't mention touching animals.

AYLOR.
To some, it makes a difference that the original ruling of cats and dogs being muktza came from a time when there were no such things as pets, and animals were around to do a job -- cats, to catch mice, for example, and dogs to herd. To others, that distinction doesn't change the ruling as it affects us today.

That's what I learned too. You can pet and play with your own pet.

OP here. we are actually giving this cat a "trial run" and I don't think we are going to end up keeping her. But we will have her in our home for the next week or so. Is she still considered our pet in that case?

We hold that pets do not fall in the category of Muktza.
I found this on Chabad.org
All of the above, as we said, is the conventional law pertaining to handling animals on Shabbat. It has been argued by certain prominent halachic authorities 13 [Including Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (Responsa Igrot Moshe, Orach Chaim vol. 5, responsa 22)] that household pets are not included in the category of muktzah at all, because they have an "immediate practical use" -- namely, providing people with pleasure and companionship. There are others who disagree, maintaining that the rabbinic prohibition against handling animals on Shabbat was imposed across the board. As there are differing opinions in this matter, speak to your rabbi, who will advise you regarding your particular situation.

That link is fabulous, thanks so much! If you have any other sources, would you be so kind as to post them here? http://imamother.com/forum/vie.....20248
DH and I are working on compiling a sefer on pet ownership.
