I am making a recipe for Beef n' Broccoli Lo Mein by Susie Fishbein (Kids). It calls for hoisin sauce, which I do not have acess to. Any ideas for substitution?
(Anyone ever made this recipe? It's delish- I have made it many times in the past with just skipping the sauce, but I figured someone out there may have an idea. I have tried googling for ideas, but it's too confusing and compicating- I'd rather something "tried and true".)
Thanks!

If you are in Brooklyn, Benz's on Albany Ave (just off Eastern Parkway, Crown Heights) sells it. I don't know of any substitutions. I think Shoprite Ave I may sell it also.

I believe you can use soy sauce ...
http://www.cdkitchen.com/recip.....shtml
hoisin sauce recipe:
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons peanut butter or black bean paste
1 tablespoon honey or molasses or brown sugar
2 teaspoons white vinegar
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons sesame oil
20 drops chinese hot sauce, habenero or jalepeno
1/8 teaspoon black pepper.

Hoisin sauce is called for when you need a bit of kick in the flavour. So perfectly ok to substitute with soysauce, crusehd garlic and a bit of chili.

Have you looked in your regular grocery store (I assume you live in the US)? Lee Kum Kee makes an AWESOME hoisin sauce and it is OU. They also make some other Chinese pastes/sauces which are also great. I have tried heimish brands and they do not even come close to this. Look for it in the Asian food aisle. That reminds to stock up -- we are almost out!

I am copying out of my recipe book, not the original recipe (for some reason the broccoli is left out of my recipe so this isn't the most accurate recipe)
8 oz spaghetti, add 3 T soy sauce, 2 T sesame oil, 2 T sugar
slice 1/2 large onion and saute in 1 T canola oil
mince 4 cloves garlic, add 1 t ginger and add to onions
slice 1 lb meat thinly (I think the cookbook specifies which type) and saute with onions for 5 minutes, till not red
mix 1 t beef bouillon powder and 1/2 cup water, and add to meat
add 3 T soy sauce and 1 T hoisin sauce to meat
mix the spaghetti, broccoli and meat together

how long do I have to cook the meat after I add the water, soy sauce and hoisin sauce?

20 drops hot sauce (optional)
1/8 tsp black pepper
Simply mix together
At first, it does not appear like it will mix, but keep at it just a little bit longer and it will.

Hoison sauce is a completely different flavor than just soy sauce. I've made Hoison sauce from scratch before, using a recipe similar to MM, and it's very easy. It's just putting a bunch of different sauces, vinegar, and peanut butter into a food processor, pulse a few times, and you're good to go.

When is the brocolli added?
And about the spaghetti, I'm assuming that the ing. You write to add to it is after spaghetti is cooked & you let it sit in sauce. Am I right?

You're right about the spaghetti, and I don't make it with the broccoli (that's why it's not in my version of the recipe).
