Ever go to someone for a meal, they serve the course, and then you fill yourself up, and then discover there's another course? Or, you eat a little in the first course expecting the second, and the second course is something you hate, so you're hungry?

Sure have! Though Shabbos meals tend to be pretty standard, maybe one serves fish and another doesn't, one serves soup and another doesn't, we usually expect a poultry or meat main course, a side dish or two, and dessert.

when it's not shabbos, then there's much more variation.

still, to list the menu at the start of the meal is a little weird IMO.
