How about donating something in his honor and zcus?
Example here in Israel it's popular for birthdays to donate something to our local hatzalah (the local united Hatzalah in most cities are extremely welcoming and accommodating) thry add your name to the equipment. You get to meet the volunteer who gets the donated equipment. It's so uplifting knowing that this year, while you work, learn, eat and sleep you are saving lives and the merits are forever.

Thanks, I think he’ll prefer something more materialistic though. He’s not so frum…

That’s a good idea! What are some examples I can think of in NY NJ area. My budget is not unlimited…probably around 100.
