Isnt it just a cough?
Probably viral.
Unfortunately a cough can last for weeks.
Is it during the day, ? Night?
How old is he?

My daughter recently had the same thing and tested positive for flu B.

Put a slice of onion in his socks at night on his heel
And in the morning :
Take an orange. Cut off top part, sprinkle with salt, cover and put in a bowl and put in the microwave for five minutes, take out of the microwave, drizzle with honey - the top will probably fall off, squeeze out all the juice from the orange into the bowl, have him take a tablespoon of that in the morning and night before he goes to sleep until his cough goes away.
Call me crazy. Just try it.
Possible he breathed in something that his body is just expelling.
