My almost 8 year old son really enjoys building very interesting and cool structures out of magnatiles that aren't really suited for magnatiles, like structures that are interesting geometric shapes that often don't really work and fall apart because you can't really soundly build what he's trying to build. Is there another building toy that is good for this?

Look for toys where you build a circuit.

Knex- there is literally no limit to what he can make, especially if you add on extra peice types like flexible/bendy ones, motors and gears, wheels...

Some Lego sets have unique pieces that let him build at different angles

Thanks for the k'nex suggestion, it looks very cool and fun! It looks like there are so many different sets, what do I need to know, how do I choose?

Have you gotten him Lego? Magnatiles are good for younger kids.

I see they still sell the metal erector sets which is the classic toy that fits the bill.

Kapla bricks! A simple classic that that doesn't limit the imagination. My kids build the coolest structures with these. You can get a knockoff brand for cheaper.

Another vote for kapla blocks. You can build really amazing structures with them.

We had Kapla growing up and it was definitely fun but only to an extent, because there's nothing holding the structure together, it's all just a balancing act.

you can get kits from kiwico for a fun activity. Then you can use the thing you build...
