I hate it. I don’t go to the SN Melava Malka’s or events etc. I find a lot of wallowing and self pity among the people there and the speakers always grate on me. I come away feeling gross.
I refuse to make being a SN parent my whole personality which I find a lot of people fall into.

Yes 😢
I am lucky that because of meds and seizures my child is exhausted and in bed for the night at 7pm so I do get a quiet night usually.

Do you worry about the future a lot or are you more one day at a time?

As a speech therapist, I’d love to hear what kinds of therapists/modalities you felt were most helpful when working with your child

One day at a time. I plan to get her into a group home when she’s in her twenties so she will be more set up and not so reliant on my my kids when the time comes. I just hope group homes will be more functional by then.

Interesting question. She really struggles with her speech and lost a lot of it when her seizures got very severe. We got a lot of it back now.
I’m not an expert but the speech therapists found that teaching her functional phrases helped a lot with her day to day interactions.
They’re also focusing on little words to add to basic sentences that make her requests clearer and sound more “mature”

Same, I'm bored and a mom of sn child.
I love going to these events though, it makes me feel less alone and I use it to network and make friends.
Just now, I'm sitting outside the bathroom (keeping my younger daughter company while she falls asleep) and I hear my son behind the closed door in the bath talking out loud. "Hashem has answered my tefilos. I will be able to go to school tomorrow at last!" I originally made an appt for him tomorrow but then he was so upset about missing the school masquerade that I switched the appointment to a later time.
Now he's saying the bracha for krias hatorah, messing up most of the words.
Now he's blowing bubbles with the water, laughing and saying "I love gargling"
He's 12 and mostly independent despite his rare disease that causes emotional, physical, and mental disabilities.

So cute 🥰
I always wonder if it’s harder to have a child that’s more on the ball then less..

So when the siblings are younger it’s pretty bad. She can hurt them if we can’t get to them fast enough or they get really annoyed from her. But I’ve found that once they turn 9 or 10 then they become amazing with her. They are sensitive and loving and it’s heartwarming to watch them interact.
My kids are absolutely amazing with her. The youngest now doesnt really like her but I’ve seen it play out before and within a couple of years I know it will work out…
