Listening to music. Getting the weather. Getting the Zman for Shabbos 😂 getting any info from the internet hands free. Shopping list. Reminders. Times.

I've seen an alexa before, does it work the same way? How is it different?

It’s smaller than the regular echo.

And the sound on the echo dot is not as robust as the sound on echo in terms of listening to music.

Echo or echo dot is the device and Alexa is the interface of the device, you need to have Alexa app installed on you phone or tablet for the echo dot to work.

If you have an echo dot you have Alexa.

It’s great to create shopping lists on (while I’m cooking I yell at her to add whatever to my list and I can print it after).

It can play Amazon music or connect to your Spotify.
Can also be used as an intercom if you have other devices in your house.

I have used it in the past for music, weather, etc.

But it can’t be filtered and my kids would tell it to play certain songs (all kosher, but got me nervous).

Now, I just use it as a Bluetooth speaker for my computer. My kids don’t remember that you can talk to it..

ETA I agree with the poster above. Having an echo (that’s connected to your wifi), is essentially having Alexa. Maybe not on a phone app, but you can still create lists, ask questions, set timers/reminders, etc.
