We are thinking of the names leah and Tamara for our baby girl.
People have commented leah means weary or a cow.. and that she had a very difficult life. Would be great to hear a positive spin on the name meaning..
Also tamar which is our alternative, the lives of both tamars was very sad..
Should this be something we consider when choosing a name

I think the "had unusually difficult lives" doesn't really apply when talking about Tanach. The whole point is they they achieved greatness in various difficult circumstances. We only worry about unusual difficulty when talking about normal people.

I guess with leah, it's that she seems to be the underdog/ less loved and portrayed in not a very positive light as "weary" "teary eyed" etc.
Tamar I guess is different - hard life but viewed as upright and strong

Leah, while initially being the less well set-up, managed to change her circumstances and marry Yaakov through sheer force of will and tefillos and crying. Even as the less favored, she was married to Yaakov for the longest, and mothered a full half of the shevatim, all of whom had different characters but still became vital parts of klal Yisrael, including being the mother of Kohanim, kings, learners, warriors, etc.
