20 years ago when I was dating, the boys would come to the house wearing a hat with the brim down, but they always took off the hat and put it in the back seat of the car before driving. I think they put it back on when we got the location but I can't remember!

When I was dating (more like 25 years ago) the rule was that you took your hat off on the 4th date. Or maybe the 3rd, I don't recall. And it was to show you have some hair.
In my case, it didn't mean much as my husband went bald a few years later.

Maybe it’s just my sons but when they get a new hat they save it. I’m not sure what for. But the good hat sits in the closet and they wear the old one past the point where it looks like a Purim costume. The new one is being saved!

When my boys get new hats, they use them for Shabbos, and their Shabbos hat gets relegated to weekday.
I do the same when I get a new Shaitel.
