Green - thankyou so much
I just made this for my book club - which was in my house tonight.
They loved it all wanted the recipe. Believe me I am the worst baker . They all make fancy cookies and cakes when they host. I sometimes buy stuff!
But I got in from work and made this. The house smelled great. I served it still warm.
Thanks
You saved me

Has anyone made this with oil? Greenfire, I know you said it won't work--have you tried it before and it flopped? I think if you use something like 7/8 c. oil for every c. of shortening, you can sub oil in a lot of recipes. I really want to make this for Shabbos, dh loves marble cake and mine never come out!

I use margarine and it comes out great. Can you get olive oil margarine where you are?
Unless a recipe calls for butter or margarine to be melted before adding to the batter, I don't recommend substituting because the batter will have a VERY different consistency.

I've never heard of olive oil margarine. Hmm. I'm off to Whole Foods now, so I'll check what kind of margarine/shortening substitutes they have here. Thanks, Yesha.

hey I just literally put this cake in the oven ...
as for the oil - I've tried it - never comes out the same - the solidity helps to create the crumble on top ... imho ...

Hi, I just made the cake with my 7 year old... my biggest problem was the 'crumb' topping.
When I tried to use my mixer in part one of the recipe, it was soooooooo difficult- it never got really crumby, still 'crisco'y.
I took out the one cup for the 'crumb' topping- but it just looked like batter and not 'crumbs' at all. Any clues in what I'm doing wrong? TIA.

Yeah... don't use your mixer. Use your fingers to mix it together to make crumbs.
