Looking for something inexpensive that will hold washable paint well. I want to do a project with kids that will not cause permanent damage. I tried canvas but I think it comes out a little too washed-out looking, plus even cheap canvases cost at least $1 each and I need a lot. I tried watercolor paper but it was too absorbent and the texture didn't go well with the poster paints. Oaktag is too flimsy feeling, I want it to have a nice feel so the kids can go home feeling like they made something of substance (hence the initial canvas attempt.)
Ideas/links, please!

None of those links meets my needs, but thanks for the research!
As sometimes happens, as soon as I give up my search and call for help, the right thing comes up. I THINK that what I'm looking for is mat board or backing board. I ordered a package of that on Amazon Prime so in a couple of days I should find out whether it fits the bill!

I think one of these is what you're looking for
https://www.amazon.com/stores/.....17011
They come in all different sizes and materials depending on what type of paint you're using. It's basically the feel and durability of canvas in a paper
