a cappella literally means "as in chapel." it comes from before the christians allowed musical instruments to be played on the sabbath. it generally does involve multiple harmonies. I'll see if I can find some true jewish a cappella to post on this site, it is absolutely beautiful.

I can't take this kind of stuff because I grew up with a lot of the acapella church stuff in Sweden. This sounds just like it. Yikes!

yes, salamone rossi's music was banned from shuls because it was too similar to church music. I still think it's beautiful.

Well the Chassidim frown on the way the davening is done in the more Young Israel type shuls here because there's a designated choir to sing along with the chazzan, where in the chassidish shuls, the kahal just sings freestyle... I think both are beautiful and have their own flavor.

Hey, if you need an alto count me in! Though my sight reading is quite rusty.

mummiedearest, Rossi is one of my favourite. We usually host a bunch of choir guys (some coming from Russia, Israel and Germany) for holidays, it's incredible when they started practicing Rossi's Adon Olam.

Another beautiful Rossi piece

This is amazing the way they keep the rythm without a conductor! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62-aBOZrqh8

Mrs. Bissli... this would be an in person group just to chill... and sorry, long distance harmony just doesn't cut it!!!!!!!! LOL
