What helps very chapped/dry hands. For a 5 year old? We tried extra sensitivity cream but it made it burn.

I used dr fischer hand cream and it worked great. For more serious chapped hands jergens hand cream works, but it does burn.

Try a natural cream (The company Melaleuca has a great cream called "Renew", or Babo Botanicals has a hydrating sensitive cream)
Try to make sure that the kids' hands are completely dry when going out in the winter

Before bed, Use the aveeno nighttime eczema- apply liberally and cover hands with old socks. By morning it will be almost healed.
Yes it does burn for a few minutes, but it passes quickly and the results are worth it, and my kids agree. They know it will be uncomfortable but they are willing to do that because they know that ultimately it will be worth it.
By day, use the regular anveeno eczema.
Use aveeno regular moisturizer for maintenance.
We have found that the aveeno works much better than any other brand, including eucerin.
Refuah shelaimah!

I've had success using extra virgin olive oil. But most important is never to go outside in the winter without gloves.
Also, I don't use soap on the top of my hands, I only soap the palm and the fingers.

An ointment will burn less then the cream. It's the alcohol in the cream that burns or irritation to one of the ingredients.
Cerave makes one in a dark blue tube. It's called healing ointment. That's really good. Put it on generously and rub it in. Dry skin will absorb it pretty quickly.
There's also a very good more expensive one called norwegian hand cream neutrogena. It's also an ointment and shouldn't sting. I'll even put that one on my eyelids.
There's also something called working hands that is really good. It's an very thick cream.
Everyone has a different experience with creams. It's trial and error to figure out what works for you.

Good old vaseline works amazing. Rub it all over her hands before she goes to bed at night.
The fancy scented products often make it worse/dry it out more.
Make sure she is wearing gloves outside.
