Any thoughts on the following statement which Dafna Yoran, the prosecutor in the Daniel Penny case, made to her boss?
"Do you want me to wear a skirt or do you want me to think, because I can't do both at the same time!'"
(Context: "Yoran...began her career at a time when the unspoken rule was 'women had to wear skirts in court.' Yoran said to her boss, 'Do you want me to wear a skirt or do you want me to think, because I can’t do both at the same time! I was then the first woman to wear a pants suit on trial in New York County.'")

I would have to ask what she meant by that. Why can't she think in a skirt? Does it make her aware of her physical vulnerability to s@xual assault? And does she imagine she speaks for all women or solely for herself? It darn well better be just for herself, because obviously many of us can think perfectly well in a skirt, tyvm.
However I have no argument with her desire to be allowed to wear trousers in court. There's no reason to force on her a cultural construct that seems designed to highlight the fact that she's female in a setting in which her femaleness is irrelevant to the proceedings. Why would she need to? So the men can leer at her legs? No different from requiring waitresses or female flight attendance to wear high heels--a totally unnecessary pandering to male voyeurism.

Without knowing who she is and seeing this comment in a vacuum, I think it is ridiculous and demeaning. It seems to indicate that being more feminine diminishes intelligence. Our clothes should have no impact on brain function. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to wear a skirt and cross-examine at the same time.

Some women used to wearing pants find skirts very uncomfortable, and it seems like she was arguing against what was (to her) a very arbitrary dress code.

Why did she not retort that she would wear a skirt if the judge and the male lawyers wore one, too?
