My dc came home from sleepover camp with every item covered in sand!! Help!! TMI

Put first load in after shaking it out a bit. Ran two cycles on warm with lots of detergent and oxyclean -and clothes still full of sand! Can't Believe It Gonna tey it on a cold cycle next as google suggests thats better, lol. But what do u all do?? I didn't even touch dc's towels and swim stuff -those have even more sand! Can't Believe It

Beyond exhausted and no energy for this. Best part of sending to camp. Not. Thanks for any advice and commiserating! Wink

Before washing, shake out the clothing & rinse everything in the bathtub under cold water. If you put clothes full of sand in to the machine, the sand just stays in the machine.

Best scenario is to deal with dry sand. So if possible, hang everything to dry outside on hangers. Once clothes are dry, brush off as much sand as possible. If there's still more, you'll have to rinse the clothes by hand, under strong running water, which is a bigger pain in the neck (and you have to be careful not to clog your sink pipe as well).

Sand is terrible for your washing machine, plus it doesn't filter all out, and the clothes will still be sandy after washing. So do everything you can to get the sand off before you wash anything.

Good luck!

No, I don't think most kids come home from camp like this. How did it happen? Was she in Sternberg & slept in a tent?

I work in a sleepawaycamp and all my kids stuff ends up similar....
Shake out all the sand 1st. Have your child do it outside. Then wash in cold.

Let it all dry completely first! Then it'll come off when you shake out outside.

You might also need to clean the washing machine too.

Let it dry. Put it in a big garbage bag with a bunch of baby powder. Shake around, then shake things out. Meanwhile, wipe out the machine with slightly damp paper towels.

And in the wash, you can add some baking soda, which helps a bit with the sand but is great for the smell.
