can you please give me some tricks?
I'm short and overweight and headed to a with-it, fit crowd and I'm dreading it.
how do I look chic? my style is very basic, color-block, not dainty. I like bold, sharp clothes and more chunky shoes/sneaks. ballet shoes on me looks clowny.
I like to hide my "curves" as they aren't as hot as it sounds. so no fitted tees or skirts.
teach me your tricks. thank you.

Wear clothes that fit. Not showing-off-tight, just more or less fitted. It will always look better, no matter your dress size.
Confidence is the ultimate accessory.

I am, but I am also very tall and we'll proportioned so I carry my weight well.
I agree with Aurora. don't wear sack like clothing. You think it hides the curves but it just makes you look bigger all around. It does take a while to gain the confidence to do this, but the difference is like night and day. You do need to learn your proportions and which clothes elongate or shorten the various parts of your body so you can always dress for your shape. A session with stylist can really help you learn how to do this.

I'm also tall so I'm not sure if this helps you....
While I agree with above posters to wear clothing that fits, at least for dressy, for regular weekday there is a "trick" I do alot.
Basically, discover your area that looks the best, maybe your shoulders are skinner, etc.
By me it's my legs/hips that are the skinniest, with broader shoulders. So I'll highlight that by wearing tighter or straighter skirts, with a cute, more loose or oversized (not too oversized) top.
Pair with cute shoes and nice wig, and it looks great.
If you are skinner at the top with bigger hips, I would suggest like a more flary skirt with a more fitted t-shirt.
I can provide links to give examples if you want to share your body type.
Good luck!

I'm small on top, not too busty, small shoulders. carry my weight lower down.
I really dislike fitted clothes. I'm uncomfortable physically and mentally.
wish I looked good in a mimu-maxi dress, the way their models do.

I am very overweight but tall. I find the trick is to wear more fitted skirt/top with a more flowy/loose top/skirt. I don't like wearing all fitted because it's too revealing for my comfort level and all flowy makes me feel like a tent.

I'm wondering if you can go to a plus size store and maybe try on some more "dainty" type clothes, and maybe try loafers instead of chunky shoes.
I recently changed my style to fit my body type more. Took a while, but they just looked better on me at the end of the day.
Makeup and good looking/ freshly done wig will also help.
ETA - I have very wide hips, I love colorful patterned skirts, but at the end of the day, solid just looks better. So I mostly stick to solid skirts, with a lightly patterned top ( not sure how to describe it). And occasionally I'll wear patterned skirt and solid top.

Okay
Pointy toe shoes
Maybe sleek non-chinky loafers
Straight dresses with straight cut blazers
I think a button down shirt worn on top of a maxi dress (sleeveless but noone can see it) is a universally worn laid back summer look nowadays
For goodness sake no ruffles or floral print or anything girly. A loose cotton top hip length worn untucked with a slip skirt

I’m short and fat and I think I look chic.
I carry my weight in my hips (and stomach depending how overweight I am at that given time)
For me. A good midi/maxi skirt is a must. I spend the most time making sure my stomach or behind don’t show. Most thin slinky skirts don’t work for me so it’s a struggle for me but once I have a good skirt I like to wear short tops, it cuts me well.
I don’t wear oversized tops, But not clingy.
I like to wear hooded tops, thin sweatshirts etc
A little makeup and good sneakers/shoes.

A hip length cardigan is a no-no for me. If I wear an open cardigan it’s only a short style.
Batwing and raglan tops work well for me
And I disagree with the poster that said no riffles or floral print. I don’t see anything wrong with that if it fits well. Sometimes it camouflages better than solids.
I like to wear bright color tops.

I can wear fitted on my shoulders and bust.
if I was more modern I could pull off an oversized dress with capri leggings and look great. |
Nothing should be so fitted that you can see the outlines of your figure like that. That's not fitted - that's skin-tight.
You want stuff that skims your body, not clings to it.

Do yourself a favor and find a great seamstress. I had ONE DRESS professionally fitted to my shape and size and it looked INCREDIBLE and I am now seriously considering shlepping allllllll my stuff to her to be fitted.

How do you work out what style is best for you??
Im short and Iv gained quite a bit of weight.
My behind is very big .
I used to think that getting a new bra would change everything because my waist is narrowish, but it didnt work this time.
Iv also grown a cup size or 2.
Im gaining weight ONTOP of my stomach like ontop of belly button and higher.
All my dresses that I had altered to fit me well, are all too small:(
Like literally I need to move onto the next size like toddler.
Not flattering anymore.
How do I know what styles look good??
Thank you.

Nice wig is EVERYTHING . I find that no matter what I am wearing , it’s the wig that makes or breaks my look.
As far as clothing, if you can make it to Lakewood area, Sorority Boutique is amazing and they are really knowledgeable and talented with finding items that flatter each person.

I have a very large behind, otherwise I have an hourglass shape albeit a very large one. So large shoulder wide hips/butt/legs and a smaller waist.
I'm also very short.
What do you think would look good with this figure?

Can you explain to me how this works?
I'm not objectively large at all (under a size 6). But I have nursing breasts and baby belly and I just don't get how to dress. I see lots of women my age who are larger than me wearing cute ribbed t-shirts that do exactly what you say - they fit but don't cling. But everything I try on goes like this: (S) obscene -> (M) obscene -> (L) obscene -> (XL) huge and boxy. Including with shapewear, which I don't want to wear on a regular summer day. So what can I wear that will fit but not cling? How do I figure this out?
