I sauté a pound of ground turkey or beef with a large onion. Once the meat is browned I add one packet of Ortega taco seasoning mix with one cup of water and let simmer until most of the water is absorbed. You can add this mixture into any type of salad.

Taco salad:
Crushed tortilla chips
Lettuce
cherry tomatoes
avocado
canned peas
canned corn
cucumber
pickles
Dressing:
mayonaisse
salsa
chili powder
garlic powder
For the meat, if you don't have taco season, just use chili powder, cumin, garlic, bit of red pepper. If you have taco sauce, add that, but it's not necessary.

I knew I was missing a main ingredient! I completely forgot to put tortilla chips in my ingredients list. I'll edit it now.
That's like the most important part!

when you serve the salad, the meat is cold?
also, how long do you simmer it for?

I serve it with the meat at room temperature. I simmer it till the meat is browned. However long that takes.
