My friend (who is the author of several books btw)
recently flew to Israel on El-Al airlines at take off they were delayed
for some kind of engine trouble then after they were in the air for over a
hour .the pilot announced that they had to return because something
was wrong with the plain .they dumped fuel and returned to the airport
should she bentch Gommel?

Since our Rav paskens that you say Gomel whenever you fly international (nit sure about internal) you bench gomel, I would not ahve a sheala anyway.
But she could ask a Rav
BTW - why is the fact she is an author or the Elal fact relevant to thw question ?

I also asked my ROV on America and he too said that you shoud bench gommel after such a trip . after the torah is taken out ,
