I think Halacha considers any baby in a Jewish mother's womb for 9 months Jewish... and that's good enough for me!

I was under the impression that if a pregnant woman converts to Judaism, the child is born Jewish. If this is truly the halacha, than a fetus that started out non-Jewish can be born Jewish. If the halacha is applied in that way, the child would be Jewish.

I was not under that impression, southernbubby-I thought that if the woman is expecting when she converts, the baby is still a [gentile]!

I believe this is a much debated halachic issue, are you an expert in these halachos that you "consider the baby a Jew"?

I thought that the Jewish status of the mother at the time of birth was what made the child Jewish. I guess I should ask a Rav. Isn't a Jew someone born to a Jewish mother?

Yes, but I think that some hold that the time of conception is what determines a Jew's status...definitely a question for a rav.

A baby is considered Jewish if he/she's born to a Jewish mother. Time of conception is not something that can be pinpointed all the time, so that would make many cases impossible to determine.
Crayon, please post a reliable source to what you're saying.

I don't have a reliable source. I just thought the issue wasn't clear cut. Maybe it is clear cut. I haven't had personal dealings with egg implants, maybe I'm remembering something that I read incorrectly. I wasn't claiming to have that information.

what if she converts in her 8th month? upon conception she wasnt jewish. I know of a few instances of this, and the baby is not jewish. he/she has the choice at 12/13. im no Rav, but I know this is the case with these families.

The mother of a classmate of mine converted when she was pregnant with my classmate. She was told by a Lubavitcher Rov that the child born after her conversion, although conceived prior to it, is considered Jewish.

With regards to egg donation, the women who gives birth to the baby is the halachic mother, so yes, the baby is Jewish. However, the poskim who do permit egg donation stipulate that the donor be Jewish (and single) to prevent such problems/issues from coming up.

I don't know about egg implantation but would guess it's the same as conversion. It's a mochlokes. We were at the bris of a good friend baby & the mohel told us that because it's a machlokes with conversion they use the same lashon as for an adopted baby.

Isn't there a halacha that a woman who converts has to seperate from her husband for 3 months to determine just that?
I think I heard this - anyone know?
