lets say you buy the same bracelet but lab grown. I am currently seeing 7 carat for $2500. You keep it for 10 years and then sell it for the gold lets say $500 or lets say you cant sell it and its worthless.
Which one did you come out ahead? For something that looks exactly the same with the same properties.
Diamonds are not a good investment. buy lab and invest the difference in the stock market. |
Actually based on the percentage you lost you lost way more with lab diamonds. Not that you should buy jewelry for investments, but real diamonds maintain their value more than lab grown.

ahh you edited your post while I was responding.
I think we are coming to this from different perspectives. I buy jewelry that I like. That I think is pretty. It doesnt matter to me if someone in the De Beers marketing team is telling me whats considered rare or special.

Diamonds is not an investment. You walk out the door of the dealer and immediately lose half the value. Jewelry is for you to enjoy.

I dont disagree that lab doesnt hold value.
Your dollar amount lost is higher with mined. Plus factor in 10 years of opportunity cost of that $2000. Not insignificant.
Your jewelry looked the same for the last 10 years you enjoyed it but at the end of those 10 years you paid more with mined.

But at the end of the day lab grown is pretty much worthless and diamonds aren't.
Why do people buy a real chanel bag if they can buy a copy that's exactly the same for much less?

I checked an investment calculator. If your rate of return on that $2000 is 9%, you would walk away after 10 years with $4735.

because for some reason having that doube CC splashed on the front of their bag symbolizes something to them. I get it actually. if it says chanel on the front you are showing the world you can afford an expensive bag.
with jewelry, there is no emblem that tells you what it is so why bother? it doesnt symbolize any status to anyone.

You can buy a chanel copy with the logo. Same for any designer item there are perfectly good copies out there but people like the original because that retains value.

I think bags are in a different category because limited editions sometimes go up in value rather than standard jewelry that goes down.
most people dont buy bags as an investment either. if you are serious about investing, you buy real estate, stocks, bonds, etc. you dont buy jewelry or handbags.

I'm not buying either, lol.
But if I was buying jewelry, I'd look for something pretty as well as up to date, which is part of what makes the money spent on it worth it. Not something that will look dated and passe a couple years from now. So I wouldn't spend it on diamond jewelry, natural or lab.
I've read 2 articles recently about the colored gemstones taking over diamond trend--in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, which to me means it isn't expected to be just a short lived fad. This is what a growing number of women are choosing for their engagement rings, so this is what they are choosing as long term pieces.
It may take a bit of time to trickle down to the frum world, but it will. Probably in a few years, you won't see frum women wearing that much diamond jewelry anymore, it'll be other stones (who knows, maybe even pearls will make a come back). So if I was spending a chunk of money to buy something that I want to last me awhile, that's what I'd buy instead of diamonds.

Forget lab grown vs mined. I have a moissanite eternity band from Amazon that cost $90. I love it

Lady dear, pearls is making a come back. Slowly, but it's already coming back. I'm so excited. I love pearls.

When it comes to lab grown diamonds, you need to do your research. It’s a lot of trust when buying. You can buy an eternity band with with same size lab diamonds for $2000 by one store and a different store only $1600. There’s different quality’s out there etc.
I recently got mine from Abecasis (Lakewood). Very happy bH. Im guessing diamonds are about .25. Not sure exact price but was definitely not more than $2000. She’s very reasonably priced and people are very happy.

I'm not surprised to hear that lol. After reading about the gemstones vs diamonds, I figured there is going to be a complete turnaround with jewelry trends.

It's already there. I see women with lots of sapphire and rubies these days. You can get them lab grown as well. 😆

The whole value of lab grown diamonds is that it looks so similar to the real thing. The money itself that u spent on it gives it its chashivus. Lab grown is as knock off as it gets, the best imitation diamond there is

I just got a sapphire and Diamond piece. The store owner suggested I buy real vs lab if I can afford, and also said that sapphire lab has a long way to go- she doesn’t sell it, she only sells lab diamonds for now.

But lab grown also costs thousands of dollars. It's less than real diamonds but still pricey. And it keeps going down in value.
