Aryeh found out about his mother’s threats. He was incredulous and told Miri she needs to be completely honest with him. He has come to realize how crazy and dysfunctional the situation is, and that his mother has actually been treating him as though he’s her husband.

What’s strange is that many chapters ago Aryeh told Miri that he believes a child should be closer to his mother than his own spouse.
So his shock now at this revelation is misplaced...

I think he didn’t realize the reality of what he was saying when he said it. Especially then after bringing his own child home and seeing his marriage crumbling, he realized how dysfunctional his statement was

I’d be shocked if the father is not the abusive one (as well as the mother). I mean, the way he speaks to his wife, that’s never normal under any circumstances.
