Chosid: Is Amshinov open to BT's? The only amshinovers I ever met were the mechutanes of the machles' (sp) in yerushalyim.
My situation is basically that my kids are in a chassidish school and more and more we seem to be getting drawn to that way of life. We are both BT's for a long time but are sephardi. We have always felt more comfortable around chassidim but since we spent the first years of our marriage as a kollel family we have always described ourselves as yeshivish sefardi. But more and more we seem to be pulling away from the yeshivish world and more towards the chassidish world and now we are considering moving for a variety of reasons but we feel like that would be the ideal time to make any changes because we would be starting fresh. For example if my husband were to suddenly put on a shtreimel here it would be very hard. He teaches in a very misnaged yeshiva.
Maya we are definitely not moving to Brooklyn but we are also not the chabad or breslov tyoe. We are very conformist and low key I think it woudl be a big jump from what we are used to. In any case neither of those are an option. But my kids school is open to all chassidic groups but is mainly Bobov. We also used to live in Mea Shearim so we are not starngers to that way of life.
We are considering Boston.
This is all very new. It has always been on my mind but I never thought DH woudl go for it and then recently he started wearing a bej=kishe and last night we talked about the derech we want to take. It's funny cause we are making Pesach this year for the first tiem and we normally eat gebrokts but thought we better not so that way we will be used to it by the time are girls get married. We always assume they will marry chassidsih.
Anyways I'm rrambling. Any thoughts? |
I am in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel. My uncle davens in the Boston Shul in Har Nof.
My husband says I can do chassidish things inside my house but he doesn't want me to look different than the other litvish ladies around.
Fox, you aren't the only one who likes the attitude of chassidish ladies who find fulfillment in their roles. That is something I am truly striving for. I think only then will I be able to be the wife and mother that I truly want to be.

creative- How do Chassidish ladies look different on the outside?
I am Chassidish and I look the same as my Litvish neighbors.
The only case I can think of is Hungarian Chassidim where the woman wears a hat on top of her sheitel.

They also dress differently. They have this overall way of being that is just happy in their role.

CreativeMom I think this isn't always true. In my neighborhood there are a lot of Chassidim of many different varieties and while some of the women look chassidish some really don't. One of the interesting things about my neighborhood is that since there is so much variety here (various kinds of Yersuhalmi, Chassidish, Litvish, Sepharadi) you get to see that everyone comes in different types. I used get surprised when I see a long coated Chassidishe youngerman with a woman who doesn't look likeshe matches to me, but now I just figure everyone is just findingtheir own way.

You should find yourselves a rav to ask questions to before you change your religious behaviors.

I agree with Hoo. I honestly don't know what you mean about them dressing differently. You apparently live in a neighborhood with a certain "brand" of chassidim that dress alike. I have seen chassidim dressed in all different kinds of clothes. Often they dress conservatively, but so do all my Litvish friends and neighbors in K.S. For example, sometimes you'll see them in suit-like outfits. Very conservative, very Bais Yakov - teacher.
But the Litvish I know dress the same!!!!!
Then, there are the more modern chassidim that dress similarly to the more modern Litvish. Honestly, I do not see the difference AT ALL.
And Crayon - I think that they are looking for which rabbi to ask!

chosid mom: I was once by the amshinover rebbes tisch actually! Also the Bostoner rebbe just moved to E"Y and will most likely not be coming back to the US so it is unlikely that we will meet him.

Chossidmom, I saw a pic of you on your website, you don't look anything like a Satmar person or a Bobov person. Although, there are some litvish who also dress similar.

First of all there is a great thread in the Introductions section called Let's re-introduce ourselves. There are pictures of Chossidmom and the whole family there!
Secondly, you can easily find my website by clicking on my profile.
But, for convenience I will give you BOTH my blog urls here:

Get a load of my husband, though. He sure looks like the real thing

chayitty, in some chasidishe neighborhood, the majority of the mothers are still sahm's. in my own family, out of 8 married children, only 2 are working - 1 in her own business, and 1 only has one baby so far. from my own family, none of the married sibs are working. My mother and MIL only worked for a short time when all their kids were in school alreadyh.

Ah, you believe that Litvish oppose or look down on Chassidim but all Chassidim are warm, friendly, open and accepting of Litvish?
If so, can I interest you in a nice real-estate investment? Conveniently located right in Brooklyn, near the Brooklyn Bridge? As a matter of fact, it IS the Brooklyn Bridge.

Creative: the picture of chosidmom only shows her head and shoulders ...from that you can determine she doesn't look Satmar or Bobov? Just trying to understand.

creativemommy,
only 1/3 of Satmar wear shpitzels.
There's 1/3 that wear beautiful custom shaitels.
And I guess the other 1/3 wear the pillbox hats and such.
I have wonderful Satmar cousins living in Williamsburg who all wear gorgeous Shevys.

True, true . . . and it seems like more and more chassidish women with whom I'm acquainted are finding ways to add to the family income, whether through actual paid employment outside the home, a home-based business, telecommuting of some sort, etc.
The changing face of "paid employment" means that the lines will be increasingly blurred in the future between "working mom" and SAHM. The real issue in the litvish/yeshivish community is how we regard homemaking and whether we actually "walk the walk".

just read this last page now and I must agree witht the posters who say that most (it's never all, just abasic generalization) chassidish women are happy and content with their roles as wives/mother/homemaker.
I have quite a few non chassidish and litvish friends and I'm seeing this difference more and more. even my friend who did not grow up so chassidish but married more chassidish is now going to school.
