The only universally appreciated gift is cash

Everything else is subject to personal taste. For example someone bought me an Hermes scarf that I wish I could sell (but she’d be offended)- but someone else gifted me potholders that I love.

Dh helps out a lot of people and they’ve sent wine (either one of us likes and drinks it or I use it for cooking); chocolate or candy platter- kids enjoy; meat board - yum but I’m pregnant now so wouldn’t actually eat that; flowers- always nice.

Personally in that price range I’d like a gift card to a great cafe like cookie corner where I could treat myself to frappes and salad

You know that's more like $140 not $20-$40

I got ds's shadow and special ed morah a good quality chef knife and a wooden cutting board with a handle. It looked so classy and at least the special ed morah loved it. She thought it was brilliant. (She is the practical, fast moving type. Early 60s.)

A different time, I got his shadow (mid 20s, mother of young kids) a yummy throw blanket with a matching hot water bottle.

And once I gave her a gift certificate to a toys store.

I dont pay her to shadow. The city does. And she does an amazing job with ds.

Now she had a baby so I want to find her something.

There is no such thing as a universally appreciated anything. You should know that just from reading Imamother threads.

Don't overthink it. If she doesn't like the gift, she can always regift it. I love items I can regift because that saves me trouble and expense and may even be more impressive than whatever I would have bought.

If someone had given me an Hermes scarf and I didn't love it, I'd regift it to someone really special or for a really special occasion. Come to think of it, many years ago someone gave me a high-end brand name scarf in a style and color that didn't suit me and iirc I did regift it. For all I know it may still be orbiting the planet, being regifted over and over.

I agree that cash is universal but sometimes a gift is nice. especially to the carpool person because a cash gift would seem like a payment and then it seems petty.....

gifts with a gift reciept is always beautiful. because the person knows they can always exchange it for anything

I got a $10 gift card to a breakfast/lunch cafe and really appreciated it. It was just enough to buy myself a little treat without it turning into a major decision like gift cards of greater monetary value (wanna get the most out of it)

I gave a chocolate platter and the recipient used it for Shabbos party.

Actually the least appreciated gift for me.
Yes, I'm tight on cash, but getting $20 will just get lost in all my other bills and expenses, I won't actually treat myself out with it.

I prefer getting a tangible gift, even if it means I may regift it if it's not my taste.

I nice serving dish is somewhat universal, although, like I said, I may use it to regift.

And neither I nor DH drink coffee so that would be wasted money for us. Not a universal gift.
