My toddler went through this and is slowly getting better. He had feeding therapy done by a SLP and is slowly accepting more types of food.
Try to find a feeding therapist, it helps.

Does every picky eater have ARFID?
Is it possible to be extremely picky and have a limited diet because all those other foods taste disgusting, but otherwise be perfectly healthy and happy?

No not every picky eater has Arfid.
Yes it is possible to be picky and be otherwise healthy.
As long as this child eats enough of those foods and maintains a healthy weight.
I have another child that is a very picky eater.
She went through a period of time that she would only eat cereal with milk and only a certain brand of that type of cereal.
Some nights she ate 3-4 plates of that as dinner.
As long as she got enough calories in I didn’t say a word.
(A lot of eating disorders are made worse by power struggles.)

I am begging you to take care of it when she is young.
We have a family member who did not take care of it, and now she is married and it's a problem.
Too bad they could not treat it when she was younger.

That’s what we’re trying to do! Not sure who the right shaliach is or where to look for further help because we already see a therapist and don’t see much success

Any suggestion of feeding therapist for a 11 yr old boy thats located in Brooklyn? This thread is so validating. My son is the onky kid in his class that is not in camp because I couldnt bring myself to let him go when I knew that he will basically starve there.
Also, he has a long historg of Strep and do believe its pandas related.
I have picky eaters in general but he is on a a totally different level.

Following for Brooklyn advice! I sent my daughter to camp with the few items she eats. I keep calling to see if she ate! So nervewracking!

Although we haven't gotten an official diagnoses, my daughters neurologist who she see's for some minor ADHD thinks she has ARFID and so do we. Our first stop right now is a dietician who has a lot of experience with ARFID to make sure we're doing our best to make sure she's getting enough vitamins and calories every day.
After that we'll discuss therapy. I feel like I need to make sure she's eating enough before starting what seems to be a verrrry slow process of food exposure etc.

Look into Neophobia.
I think my daughter has it. These kids are not necessarily underweight and can often be overweight from thier limited diet.
I just started researching it.
I think I am going to try to expand off of what she already eats. For example she eats yogurt from only one brand and only 2 flavors. So I'm gonna try other flavors. Another example is she eats challah roll from only 1 brand. Going to try another brand etc...
I am also going to let her know she can spit it out and rinse her mouth with water that will be availablenext to her. I'm going to make a sticker chart for a prize.
The anxiety piece is a massive factor.

YES!
Neophobia sounds EXACTLY like what we are dealing with! Is it treatable?
Is it a type of arfid?

I am still doing research on it. I was also confused because it seemed like Arfid but not. If you see anything helpful, please post! I will do the same!

I can’t find any information on neophobia. It sounds like it exists but I can’t find any information about treatment or who can help

Op, I'd def explore the autoimmune part of this.
I have a child with arfid. We addressed it behaviourally becuase she was very young. She also has adhd.
Lately, she started disappearing from the shabbos table. 3 weeks in a row. And there were always tantrums around food times.
She wanted only a specific type of cookie ans wanted to fill up ont hat before supper. Then say she's full and not eat supper.
She also barely eats in camp and comes home like a raging lunatic.
Last week, she went into a rage over the cookies. I said no as we were serving supper. She grabbed the washcup and banged it with all her might into the sink breaking the sink. Then went over to her door and kicked it until the door frame came off the next day she broke the door.
Once she goes into a rage there is no stopping her. She's 9 under 50 lbs, and wears size 7 clothing. Shortish but still of average range.
But omg she's so powerful.
After my other kid ran a fever and tested positive for strep, we had hee swabbed and what do you know? She had strep.
And I realized her behaviours went downhill from when another of my kids had strep around 4 weeks ago and she likely caught but was never treated!
So now she's on abx and she eats with all of us bh.
Very often these types of behaviors is basal ganglia inflammation. You can work with the child to overcome the symptoms but the AE will either surface in another way or she will regress later chv. There are very few lucky ones who's body will eventually heal on its own.
I'm urging you to continue seeing a therapist and arfid specialist with your child, but also look into the autoimmune inflammation piece.
Healing Pans/pandas/ae is always a multi pronged approach

Has anyone tried hypnotherapy for Arfid treatment? I really wonder if it would help with the anxiety aspect.
I also want to mention that I have a zoom meeting scheduled with the director from Equip Health to hear more about their treatment options for Arfid so I can post about it once I'm done.
