Also I'm around ten years younger than the rest of you who piped up about the shpitzel flying off and I remember an incident too. Guess it happened more than once.
She was wearing a turban and innocently watching the game when the ball came flying in her direction and knocked it of. I'll never forget the look of that freshly but unevenly shaved scalp.
Maybe that was the moment I realized I could never ever shave

I'm not from Satmar, but why do you keep on referring to Teacher/class, as opposed to counselors/bunk?

Because that's what they were called. Is it still that way? Or is it phased out?

I remember being shocked when we visited Satmar camp. The way the headcounselors were called on their last names. Miss whatever. They were referred to as headteachers & counselors as teachers with last name. Head counselors were in fancy outfits like suits, hi heels, their hair blow dryed. No ponies, sneakers, funky TShirts or dressed up silly for special days, special tops with camp theme wording.... It was a culture shock from our own camp.

Those bunkhouses, tons of them lined up so close to each others looked like barracks....it gave me a freaky feeling of Holocoaust not camp. Those were immaculate inside, you were able to lick the floor clean. Girls did all these jobs as mandatory chores or as activities.
Camp I was coming from, the messier the room, the more fun. We had cleaning chores, but simple stuff. Washing floors and toilets were left to the janitors.
Our camp had a competition sport game against them. There were tons of bleachers till the ceiling where everyone was standing, watching the champion competitors in center & cheering for their division. It was indoor called shpiel house. I thought it was for special events or competition sports but I was wrong, we were told that every activity is conducted that way. It's always basically same champion sports players sent to play, to represent their bunk.

I didn't see major playing fields outside where everyone in bunk should participate in an activity together.

Later as staff some were counselors, the rest were called logos and had a side job like kokosh cake cutters, egg crackers, bread slicers/smearers etc.
I found it hysterical when heard about it, because all these jobs were filled by kitchen staffers, in our camp, not as staff job or as an activity.

lots of changes since, heads are no longer called miss or by last name.
lots of new playing fields and sports has been massively upgraded
also the activities are now more involving everyone...

No such job as kitchen staffers other than some volunteers. like I remember we wished to go help out in kitchen, prepare portions etc bc that way we chickened out of whatever we needed to do then plus sometimes a treat even

Oy! horrrible!

There were so few girls there on tisha b'av that they put them all into one bunk over tisha b'av.
My classmates were farchalisht to go see the performance in machne hachudosh 2 days after tisha b'av that instead of coming back to camp from being home for TB they first went to chudosh to watch the performance and took a van back together to Kerhonkson. Mr. Herzog was so mad that he made every girl walk ALONE from his scary office to the 'downtown' bunks in the pitch dark at 2 a.m. I came from the country, so I was already in the bunk when all this went down. yoish, the memories...

My 9th grad bunk was located on top of the little sheel the men had. Mr. Lichtenstien came for a meeting with Mr. herzog and were making such a ruckus in the bunk on top of their head, that Mr. Lichtenstien decided to split our class. We had to fight not to be split. And on the first day of 10th grade, back in school, I got punished. My father had to call him and threaten to involve the satmar rebbe (the beirach Moshe) if he didnt let me back into class.

My gosh. I'm so glad I don't have daughters. The **** my parents had to put up with!!!

I’m so rolling from this thread. How did I miss this. Those were the years and oh did I wait for camp all year long.
And Mama bear I think you were my counselor.

So funny! You described everything exactly the way we felt when our camp used to come play against their camp. We were partly amused partly incredulous that this is what they call "camp".
I remember staring in amazement at those shelves in the bunkhouse. The tops were folded razor sharp and organized by color not by individual camper. Like all blue shirts on one pile all pink ones on another.

Oddly, we were uber proud with those organized shelves and spotless bunkhouses.
I went to visit my daughter last year for the first time That she went to camp I was quite amused to see how much has changed. No perfect shelves, no shiny floors. It was actually dirty’ish.

Those slices of fresh bread in the morning when you had the waitress shift. We would rush to set the tables for the first transport and then sit down to eat slice after slice

In my times, going back 12-14 years ago, it was headcounselors, dressed up every single day. Can't remember though if they were called by their 1st name or not. But regular counselors definitely went by their first name.

I'm so old that probably very few of you were there in my times.
I started camp in 7th grade, I was in מאה אחוזים and my class was עשר
In 8th grade I was in chudosh, in פרדס מבחר, my class was אתרוגים.
In 9th grade I was in the very ill-fated אבני מלואים in ברקת....
we had the salmonella outbreak....
"ברקת ברקת צוקוועטשטע פאטעיטאס"...
"אין הארלעם פראוועט מען האלאווין"....
10th grade I was a fourth grade counselor. My almost favorite year. I loved my girls. I made a ton of money in tips!
11th grade, I was a 7th grade teacher.... we were in יד אחת, and my class was זרת. my favorite year!!

If you were in camp any of these years and you remember anything of what I wrote, pipe up!

Btw I take credit for this thread, bc all of my comments on the Yiddish lyrics thread inspired all this Very Happy

I pretended to be sick so I can go home. Avigdor Rosenberg came onto the bus to try to get girls that didn't have fever, off the bus. I pretended to sleep. As someone who always looked undernourished and pale. I prob looked sick to him..

Idk why but "transport" gives me holocaust vibes. I'm curious why they chose that description. Anyone know?

You mean dressed in costumes.
Those were my times too. They were still called miss when I was in 8th/9th/10th but that was dropped a year or two later I think
Counselors were 11th graders and went by first names

ETA my last year in camp was 11 years ago
