Lol I love this thread. I have a goldfish that my kid brought home from camp that my husband takes care of. He bought it a huge tank and cleans it and changes the water and put in a filter and everything. I tell him he's a really good fish Tatty lol.

From a mother who has gotten quite a few surprise goldfish I ask, how about we just not get the fish in the first place, and avoid the kids’ heartbreak and parents being busy with it?
Attn very well-meaning camps, Morahs, etc.:
Please do not send home a goldfish unless you send it along with it all of the amenities it needs to keep it alive.

It’s not a blame the Morah.
My dd got hers from a school siyum where a different mother bought it as a centerpiece.

All your points are excellent op. I must add as a veteran mom to an elderly school carnival goldfish some goldfish naturally just have better Mazel than others. I do not believe most carnival goldfish are strong and harty. Weve had many many other goldfish over the years gave them the same excellent care and non have lived like this fellow

I plead to disagree with you. Bringing surprise pets home can be a wonderful chinuch lesson in many ways. Including children seeing how mom reacts to change and surprise 😮 ☺️ 🤔

Anyone here from BYLA and remember the dead goldfish at the carnival?
They were giving away fish to little kids and didn't notice most had already died!
(I worked a different booth).

My son came home from school with a goldfish last year. His teacher gave them out as a contest to see whose lives the longest. We managed to keep it alive for six months, we (meaning ME) won the contest and I didn't get a prize!! 😜
One day we came home and it was dead. My son went through all the stages of grief over that fish but I was very relieved to be rid of it. My son said it died of loneliness as it had no friends.

We had a goldfish for 8 years in a small fish bowl. We changed the water frequently.
