Travel on Thanksgiving itself for better empty your airport but Wednesday before will be packed.

Day after or before more people will be traveling to or from their plans day of they almost never travel cuz they're already where they want to be hopefully.

I think you’re confusing Dec 25 with December 31. December 25 is not a drinking day. It’s a family day with presents and food. December 31 is a potentially rowdy alcohol based celebration. I have traveled on Dec 25 and only encountered smaller crowds and lower staffing ratios. It can be harder to get assistance that day, but I haven’t had difficulty. On Dec 26, people head out for vacations or family trips (It’s the Chol Hamoed of Xmas week!!)

My father always warns me on the 25th in the evening to be careful because of the drunks because people need to drink to deal with family and then they leave [especially if their family is within driving distance] on the day in the evening

and this is his warning to me every year maybe this was more of a thing when my father was younger but I don't know I just thought I'd share it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for the drunks though.

I think the concern about Dec 24/25 was Nittelnacht in the shtetl and hooligans beating up Jews. Unfortunately, I think that happened around many non Jewish holidays. That led Rabbaim to make rules allowing people to stay home and not learn that night. I understand that there are also Kabbalistic reasons that people hold that way. Fortunately, I think we are safer today on December 25, at least in some places in the world. On the other hand, we have numerous other safety concerns. But going back to the original OP, based on experience, it’s a safe day to travel.
