Imagine I bought an apartment in this area for an extra 300,000 nis because I knew I could rent it out 5-6 x a year and pay my high mortgage and still live so centrally. All the sudden I am stuck losing out .

It sucks, but nobody is owed rent. I mean what's the alternative to landlords being "stuck losing out"? People being forced to rent from them at super-high vacation prices?

And it's not like covid or war. There are people who planned to have vacation rental income whose homes are now in active combat zones. Iy"H for these people there will still be other renters. They just won't be able to benefit from this one specific captive audience during this one 3-day period.

I am sure that most ppl did not buy counting on short term rentals. We just had covid, wars etc.

Either way, the community is smart to try to keep the prices down.

The article is overly dramatic.

What about Sukkos? All the little American kollel couples live there all year, go home for "elul zman and sukkos" and I got priced over 11k for a 4 bedroom apartment. That's normal? I'm sure that's 4 or 5 months of their rent!

They ask for that because they can. They know that people will pay. If people stop paying it will stop. But people will pay. And yes, it is normal. Its called supply and demand.

I just did a quick search on booking.com for Jerusalem apartments for 12 adults for one night. The prices started at around 2,000₪, and went up.

The highest price that Belz are allowing us 6,500₪ for a three day Yom Tov, working out to just over 2,000₪ a night. I'm not commenting on quality of accommodation, but this is the very bottom of the holiday rental market.

If that apartment costs more than a hotel, then why not pay for a hotel? That's how supply and demand works.

Because the hotel is only a point for comparison. They want to be near the Rebbe.

If the people renting out are upset, the natural counter-reaction is to refuse to rent at all.

Unfortunately thise seem to be the going rates in jerusalem. A little bit high but not much.
Its not only belz landords. Its all landlords in major cities.

But the rh prices are also the going rate. Why cap prices when it comes to belze spending but not when it comes to belze income?
They could just as well cap a 2 bedroom apt at 9-10k a month and it wouldn’t even be on the high end. but it’s a free market so the landlords are asking for 11-12k. And ppl are paying those prices due to supply and demand.
But when it comes to supply and demand for rh apts they’re suddenly here with rules

You commented that hyperbole often happens when an article is translated.

But regards to the hyperbole in the article, that often happens when the original article is in Hebrew and someone translates it.

Since I was the one who posted the article on the board, I was clarifying that I had not translated the article, or in any way added to the dramatic language used.

Oh, lol. Of course you didn't translate it, matzav did. This was originally published in hebrew.

"Bloodbath"?!?!?! Bloodbath???

They've got a lot of gross chutzpa and gassus nefesh to use that term when there are literally people being murdered every day here.

That is just disgusting.

It's an economic term. The media went crazy when Trump used it to describe the future under the Democratic party, ignoring the fact that it's well established as an economic term.

if overcharging is allowed and considered totally fine, then banding together and refusing to overpay is totally fine also.

cant have it both ways.

the best solution would have been compromise on both sides so no one loses out but here we are.

I stopped reading when it said that "many chassidim want to go to...and are forced to pay more than their means" (paraphrased but the word forced is used)

It's a want, not a basic survival need. No one is forced to pay for a luxury vacation. I haven't been to eretz Yisrael in almost two decades. Dh has never been. We have kids, we have jobs, we have expenses. I love eretz Yisrael deeply but can't go because no one can "force" me to pay beyond my means.

I'm floored. Flying to Israel for yom tov is an absolute luxury! People should live within their means, and stay home for yom tov, instead of trying to control others so their wants & luxuries can be met. No words.

Im floored that people think the market only works one way.

try to rent for whatever prices you want but if a tight knit community bands together and decides to use their collective bargaining power in their favor, all of the sudden its considered controlling others.

Read what you wrote again, How is this not controlling others? The Rebbe should be understanding enough that times are hard. Just because he feels he needs his chassidim with him over YT/his chassidim feel they need to be with him over YT, does not give him the right to take away a chunk of parnassah from everyone else.

There is a reasonable difference between normal and extortion

That's what they're doing. They're not attacking or jailing landlords or anything. They're deciding as consumers that they won't travel to that area unless they can find an apartment within their price range.

But the amounts, so far, that have been flying on this thread, are high, yes, but not extortion.
And like I said earlier its literally supply and demand.
