I feel you—BTDT. You put it so well. It’s beyond frustrating when you’re doing your best and then some—and you’re being pulled in tons of directions at the same time and no matter how hard you are working, someone is always dissatisfied.

Absolutely! I think my boss loves finding mistakes, so he can comment on them. And when he makes a mistake, it’s as if nothing happened.

This sounds toxic. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this.

I would only call an employee after hours if the mistake needed to be fixed right then (note: we have a job that includes overtime, and can be done virtually so it isn't unusual to talk to employees in the evening). But if there was nothing to do about it then or it could wait, I would definitely wait until the next day. Especially because I think these things are handled best in person, I would almost never discuss a mistake over the phone no matter what the hour (again, unless it had to be fixed right then).

Is there HR at your company? You can talk to them about it if you were really yelled at (not just that you were told off, but if your boss actually yelled) or if you you were contacted about work outside of work hours.

Im a middle manager in a huge company with federal contracts.

Some of my staff made a big mistake that could have cost the company the government contract plus cost the government billions.

Thankfully we have safeguards in place and the mistake was caught. I still didnt yell at them. I had a meeting to discuss the problem and make the ramifications more clear and check their work better going forward. Never called them after hours either.

I'm a Director a large company and caught a massive mistake that could have had significant implications. I found it when the employee who made the mistake was out one day. Didn't call (but I did send an email to their work email letting them know that I took care of it right away and that their working documents would look different the next day because I fixed it - so they could pick up from there. They had their emails forwarded to their phone Sad so sadly the notice did catch them while they were away, but it wasn't deliberate,) and I certainly wouldn't call!

I'm a manager and I would never, ever yell at my employees. And they have made mistakes that made me look bad. If I were you I'd start looking for a different job.

Whenever my boss would call me in to comment on a mistake, he would also give me another task then.

It took me a while to realise he was just doing it to make me feel good about myself embarrassed like "I still trust you" and all that...

But it really worked! I would really leave feeling better about it.

OP please either explain to your boss that you aren't available after hours and you are more than willing to discuss when your back in the office or find a different job..

It sounds like your boss is under a lot of stress and he is using you as a punching bag which is not okay on any level.

I do take calls after hours sometimes if I can because there are days I come in late/leave early and I feel that this makes up for those times for yashrus purposes. But that is my own cheshbon.

My bosses will never call me after hours about mistakes lol they only call for things that are urgent and if I am not available they understand. Nothing is so urgent that it can't wait until the next day it's really your choice and depends on the type of company and relationship you have with your boss.

To me it sounds like you need a new job or to speak to HR.
