I would get an elaborate flower arrangement with a nice thank you card. Maybe add a good bottle of wine, you can have the thank you engraved on the wine bottle.

If you want something for the whole family, how about a thank you note and a gift certificate to a local photographer so that they can get some pictures of them and their kids?

To make it meaningful - connect it to what he helped you with.
If you aren't aware of anything he needs - then you can't realistically purchase something he will use.
