at your kids expense (possibly)? I don't think so.

But isn't that the same idea as a gilgul? A neshama needs a chance to do some sort of tikkun...how do we know what the tikkun is? If a child has a bad middah, maybe it's because the neshama they got needs to do a tikkun for that same middah from a previous gilgul? So why not also a name? Especially if the name is also the name of a righteous person. For example, one of the names we're playing with belonged to my great-grandfather...who left his family high and dry. My grandmother never talked about him and all we know is his name. And we know the name was never used. DH also has a distant relative with the same name, who has great-great-nephews (or something) named for him, but DH would like to use the name anyway. Maybe my great-grandfather's tikkun is for us to use that name and give it another chance? And it's a name from the Tanach, so why would that be a problem?

Sorry if that's rambly, I just don't know how, if we say that names are "mishamayim", you can just discount something because you think it might be bad for a child. I know sugar is bad for my son, but that doesn't mean he never gets it.

And what's to say that if I named my child Moshe, after any number of great Tzaddikkim and Rabbeim, that he still might go off the Derech?

In raising our children, we do the very best we can and pray it works out in the end.

I want to give my child the best chance as possible. obviously there is no garantee for not going off the derech but I can try. if s/o needs a tikkun, I feel bad for him but I'd still prefer that he get it some other way. and if he comes down as a gilgul in the form of my child then, ok, I don't have a choice, and maybe by naming after a righteous, or at least religious, person, he'll have a better crack at being metakein his issues.

no. I think that the most important thing when naming someone is that the person had good midot and was a good person in life.

I think that in terms of frumkeit, the person you are naming will have nature and nurture to follow his/her yehadut.

There's no guarantee. But I agree with MDM- I want to do as many things in my kid's favor- and not name my kid little achashveirosh and hope that he'll come out to be a tzaddik with my amazing chinuch. Because there are so many variables in raising kids, I want to pick as many good variables as there are, and leave the rest up to Hashem.

Sorry, you'll need to do better than Achashverosh. He was just a bad person all around.

A person is only a good person if they're frum? Is that the only way we measure how a person was in their life?

of course not, but I also don't believe that its our achrayis to see that our dead relatives get a tikun. actually, both names we're considering for this one were not frum ppl. we are asking a rav about adding names or combining two diff ppl.
lots of ppl say that once add a name of s/o else (like name after two ppl) its like you're not naming after either of them.

For sure not- I said if I had a relative who was a good person but wasn't frum I'd name after them. But unfortunately I don't have that in my family.

A different person that achashverosh- how about Yirav'am?
