I got a letter in the mail today from my nephew who's in 2nd grade. I can explain what's in the letter, but it's easier to write it.
Dear Friend,
In our second grade class in Yeshiva ***, we read an adorable book called Flat Stanley. In the book, the main character, Stanley, wakes up flat one morning after a bulletin board fell on him. He is flat, but otherwise fine. The book is about the adventures he has because of his new size. One of his adventures is that he is able to fold himself into an envelope and fly through the mail to California for vacation.
In our class,we made our own flat Stanley dolls, and we are sending them on vacation through the mail as well. One of the students in our class has chosen you to be the host family for his doll. Please keep the doll with you for a week and then mail him back to us at school. When you send him back, please include a letter telling us what Stanley did on his vacation. We would love to learn about any landmarks or places special to the place he visited. If you are able to send any pictures or postcards, it will make our project that much more exciting.
I thought it was a cute idea and wanted to share. BTW, since it was his first night with us, I took a picture of him eating supper with us and eating ice-cream in the ice-cream store when we went.

A teacher in my kids' school had her class make Flat _____ (insert each child's name), using an enlarged photo of themselves. It was much more personal that way, and really exciting for the kids to see pictures of "themselves" all over the world. They made an album of all the photos and it was really special for them!

I loved the Flat Stanley project. In our school they do it in First Grade. One of the kids even sent his Flat Stanley to the widow and young son of the creator of Flat Stanley, and that Flat Stanley spent a holiday with them.

My nephew had that in class and my sister sent him to us... so I printed him out, my girls colored him and Flat Stanley had his photo taken at the Shuk in Jerusalem and with a group of IDF soldiers...

My cousin did this in her 2nd grade class and sent flat Stanley to my parents. They were supposed to take pictures of Flat Stanley doing every day activities or something like that and then send him back with the pictures. My dad, who is an anesthesiologist took him to work with him and the nurses made little scrubs and a scrub cap and took pictures of him in or around the OR. Her class got such a kick out of it!

I've had Flat Stanley sit in my Courtroom, wearing the Judge's robes. Prior to that he was in Italy. It's a great project.

That is such a cute idea. DS (3rd grade) has read all of the Flat Stanley books & DH says he remembers reading them as a kid.
